Description

Water Oak Live Edge Shelf Board

This water oak live edge shelf board combines an irregular
outline, distinctive grain, and natural edge sections along
much of both sides. Board SB-004 measures approximately
47.5 inches long, 9.5 inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick.
It is a dry, flattened blank for a custom shelf or woodworking project.

One side has a particularly expressive natural edge, while the
other also retains substantial live-edge character. The board
has some localized insect damage. Its grain and contours offer
an opportunity to create a rustic piece while preserving the
individual shape of the wood.

Natural Edges & Grain

This blank offers more natural edge detail than a board with
one straight-cut side. Decide which edge should face outward
and which face best suits your design before making changes.
Preserving both edges may be appealing for a project where
the outline remains visible from more than one direction.

For a wall shelf, check how the irregular rear edge will sit
against the wall. Keeping that edge may leave a varying gap;
trimming it can create a straighter fit but removes some
natural character. Plan that choice using the actual board
and the intended mounting arrangement.

Sanding and finishing can bring out the grain, but the final
appearance depends on the preparation and coating you choose.
Clear finishes and stains affect color differently. Test your
intended finish on an offcut or a less visible area before
applying it to the entire blank.

Condition & Rustic Details

Some areas show insect damage, which is part of this individual
board’s condition. Inspect those sections before cutting,
filling, or mounting the finished piece. Check for loose or
weakened wood, especially where fasteners or supports will
be positioned.

You may choose to retain visible marks for a rustic appearance
or prepare them further according to your project. Cosmetic
filling should not be assumed to restore structural strength.
The board’s actual condition should determine where material
is suitable for mounting and supporting objects.

Preparing Your Water Oak Live Edge Shelf Board

The wood is dry and its faces have been flattened. It has not
been sanded, polished, stained, oiled, or coated. No epoxy or
wood filler has been applied. This is an unfinished blank,
allowing you to choose the edge treatment, surface preparation,
and final appearance.

Begin by laying out the finished dimensions and orientation.
Complete any trimming or shaping before final sanding.
The 9.5-inch measurement describes the supplied width;
natural contours mean the usable depth may vary along the
length. Check the footprint of objects you plan to display.

Use a sanding sequence appropriate to the starting surface
and your chosen finish. Follow the finish manufacturer’s
guidance for preparation and dust removal. Work on the
faces, ends, and edges that will be handled, preserving
the natural details you want in the completed piece.

Finishing Choices

A clear coating can preserve a natural-looking color, while
a stain can create a different tone. Choose the product
according to the shelf’s intended use and location.
Follow its application and curing instructions, and allow
the surface to cure before installing or using the shelf.

If you fill any openings, use a material compatible with
the finishing system. Allow it to cure before further
sanding. Prepare newly exposed wood after any later cutting
or drilling, and treat those areas as appropriate to the
coating you selected.

Mounting & Installation

Sold as one wood blank. Brackets, screws, wall anchors,
and installation are not included. Select hardware that
fits the finished board’s dimensions and condition,
the wall construction, and the intended load.

Plan mounting points in sound wood. No load rating is
provided for this blank because the completed shelf’s
capacity depends on its supports, fasteners, wall,
and installation. Follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
