Description
Water Oak Live Edge Shelf Board
This water oak live edge shelf board is a dry solid wood blank
with a partially retained D-shaped profile. Board SB-006
measures approximately 49.5 inches long, 10 inches wide,
and 2.5 inches at its measured overall thickness.
One face provides the flatter surface for your project,
while the opposite side retains an irregular profile.
Part of the original rounded shape has been removed.
Turning the board over presents the flatter working face,
which can be considered for a rustic shelf or another
custom woodworking project. Its uneven reverse side
requires a different approach from a rectangular board
with two fully flattened faces.

Understanding the D-Shaped Profile
D-shape describes a cross-section with a flatter side
and a rounded or irregular opposite side. Some of that
original profile remains on this blank after partial
shaping. The two faces therefore offer different
surfaces and should be considered separately when
planning the finished piece.
The flatter face can be oriented upward for a shelf,
subject to the final preparation your project requires.
The reverse side retains natural shape and may need
trimming, additional flattening, or supports selected
around its actual contour. Inspect both sides before
deciding how to use the board.
Overall Size & Usable Material
The listed dimensions describe the blank’s approximate
overall size. They do not describe a fully rectangular
piece with a uniform 2.5-inch thickness throughout.
The retained rounded profile means the actual volume
and usable thickness differ across the cross-section.
If your project requires two parallel faces, additional
removal of wood will reduce the final thickness.
Check the actual piece before selecting a finished
size. Allow for any cutting, flattening, and sanding
rather than assuming the full listed dimensions
will remain after preparation.
A Rustic Woodworking Blank
This board is offered for further woodworking.
It has not been sanded, polished, stained, oiled,
or coated with a protective finish. No epoxy
or wood filler has been applied. You choose
which natural contours to preserve and which
surfaces to prepare for your intended use.
Retaining the irregular underside may suit a rustic
design where the natural cross-section remains visible.
Creating a more conventional shelf will require
preparation based on the actual profile. Decide
on the desired appearance before removing material
that contributes to the board’s natural character.
Planning Your Water Oak Live Edge Shelf Board
Lay out the project on the actual blank before
drilling or cutting. Choose the top face, check
the usable depth, and identify suitable mounting
locations. The irregular underside should be included
in your support plan from the start.
Brackets that require a flat contact surface may
need locally prepared mounting areas. Concealed
hardware may require a consistent drilling position
and sufficient sound wood around each hole.
Check the selected hardware’s requirements before
deciding whether it suits this particular blank.
Surface Preparation & Finishing
Complete required shaping and flattening before
final sanding. Prepare the working face for
the objects you intend to place on it,
and smooth areas that will be handled.
Work around retained natural contours according
to the appearance you want to achieve.
Follow a sanding sequence suitable for the surface
and your chosen finish. Remove sanding dust as
directed by the coating manufacturer. Test stain,
oil, or a clear coating on an offcut or
less visible area before treating the entire piece.
Any filling is a separate preparation step.
Choose materials compatible with the finish and
allow them to cure before further sanding.
Follow the finishing product’s application and
curing instructions before installing the completed
shelf or placing objects on it.
Mounting & Installation
Brackets, screws, wall anchors, and installation
are not included. Select supports that suit
the finished shape, wall construction, and
intended load. Prepare contact areas where
required by the mounting system.
No load rating is specified for this blank.
The completed shelf’s capacity depends on the
prepared board, supports, fasteners, wall, and
installation. Follow the hardware manufacturer’s
instructions when securing the finished piece.
